Forgiveness vs. Trust After an Affair: They Are Not the Same

By Terrie Beeman ·

"You're a Christian, so you have to forgive him." Maybe someone has said that to you. Maybe you've said it to yourself. It's true that God calls us to forgive. But many betrayed wives hear "forgive" and think it means "act like it never happened and trust him again right away." It doesn't.

Forgiveness is a decision before God

Forgiveness means releasing the debt. You hand your husband's offense to God and stop demanding that he pay you back. It is something you do for your own freedom and in obedience to Christ.

"And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you."Ephesians 4:32 (KJV)

Forgiveness is often a process, not a single moment. You may need to forgive the same offense many times as new memories surface. That doesn't mean you failed the first time.

Trust is rebuilt through behavior

Trust is different. Trust is your confidence that someone will act faithfully in the future. It is earned back through consistent, transparent actions over time. God forgives freely, but even He tells us to judge a tree by its fruit (Matthew 7:16).

Forgiveness is not

  • Forgetting. You will remember. Healing means the memory stops controlling you.
  • Excusing. What he did was wrong. Forgiveness doesn't change that.
  • Removing consequences. Boundaries and accountability can stay in place.
  • Accepting abuse. Forgiveness never requires you to stay unsafe.

How to start forgiving when you're still angry

  1. Tell God the truth about how much it hurts.
  2. Name the specific debt: the lies, the betrayal, the humiliation.
  3. Pray, "Lord, I choose to release this to You. Help me mean it more tomorrow."
  4. Repeat as often as you need. Jesus said seventy times seven for a reason.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to forgive my husband for cheating?

Scripture calls believers to forgive, but forgiveness is a process that God works in you over time. It does not require you to excuse the affair, forget it, or immediately trust him again.

Can I forgive and still not trust him?

Yes. Forgiveness releases the debt; trust is rebuilt through consistent, honest behavior over time. You can obey God in forgiving while trust is still being earned.

How long does it take to trust again after an affair?

Often a year or more. Trust grows as the unfaithful spouse shows transparency and consistency over many months.
